GEMI News: February 2010

GEMI NEWS is a monthly newsletter that provides information about recent and upcoming GEMI activities as well as insight into EHS and sustainability activities of its members as well as others.

On February 17-18, 2010, Carnival Corporation & plc hosted GEMI’s Meeting #1 and Forum Day in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

GEMI’s Water Sustainability, Supply Chain and Climate Change Networks met during the meeting. The Forum Day focused on Sustainable Development Stakeholder Engagement & Social Media and was led by Keith Miller, 3M and facilitated by Audrey Bamberger, Pathways to Sustainability. The Forum explored the broader issues associated with stakeholder engagement, such as identifying critical stakeholders, success factors, stakeholder relationships, managing expectations and communication methods.

During the Forum, GEMI members Jim Hunn, Carnival Corporation & plc and Keith Miller, 3M, shared their company’s experiences with stakeholder engagement. The Forum also included guest presentations from Pete Atkins, Green Order, on “Converging Business Strategy and Stakeholder Communications”; Steve Rochlin, AccountAbility North America, on “Stakeholder Engagement Manual and Tools”; and, Simon Brown and Oliver Hurrey, 2degrees and Deb Berman, Justmeans, on “The Value of Online Collaboration"....

	GEMI and Environmental Defense Fund Release New Guide to Inspire the Next Generation of Successful Corporate-NGO Partnerships

Map of Future Forces Affecting Sustainability

The Map of Future Forces Affecting Sustainability has been designed to help GEMI companies develop their own perspective of a future being shaped increasingly by external forces linked to concept of sustainable development. The Map includes elements that some may view as controversial, but recognizes the objective of this effort is to provoke thoughtful discussions that will help companies shape their business strategies in light of a more sustainability-driven future.

	GEMI HSE Web Depot
	This new version of GEMI's HSE WebDepot web tool, which was originally developed in 1998, presents a framework for Health, Safety & Environment Management Information Systems (HSE-MIS) planning, development, system rollout and improvement and organizes company experiences within these areas.

GEMI's "Business and Climate" web tool

This new version of GEMI's BusinessandClimate.org web tool, which was originally developed in 1998, provides information and guidance for businesses in all stages of the strategic planning lifecycle for climate change. The site is organized into four planning stages--Assess Risks, Formulate Strategy, Implement Strategy and Review. Advice and resources are provided from businesses that have already completed one or more of the planning stages.

GEMI Metrics Navigator™

This tool helps organizations develop and implement metrics that provide insight into complex issues, support business strategy and contribute to business success. The tool presents a thorough, six-step process to select, implement and evaluate a set of ‘critical few’ metrics that focus on an organization’s success. Each step provides guidance in the form of a worksheet, series of questions or checklist. The document has a supplemental web page that contains worksheets, additional case examples and more.

GEMI SD Gateway

This tool is an interactive GEMI web tool to raise awareness of SD concepts, identify the business case for action on SD (Sustainable Development) and serve as an “on ramp” for the SD Planner™. It is also a web-enabled version of GEMI’s SD Planner™, which was originally developed in 2002, to facilitate its use over company Intranets. Version 3.0 contains new user-friendly features that improve the ease of accessibility and encourage interaction between users. Users now have the ability to easily browse through case examples by category and search for specific case examples by keyword, as well as tag case examples as ‘favorites’ to revisit later.

	Collecting the Drops: A Water Sustainability Planner
	This tool is to be used by companies that are ready to address the water sustainability challenges that are increasingly impacting companies around the world. The GEMI Water Planner is intended to guide a user through the process of taking a corporate sustainability strategy and converting it into a site or unit strategy for water.

Forging New Links Supply Chain tool

GEMI's Forging New Links: Enhancing Supply Chain Value Through Environmental Excellence is a resource to assist managers in recognizing, prioritizing and pursing specific value creation opportunities. The tool describes a broad range of opportunities for EHS professionals, in collaboration with other functions within their companies, to enhance supply chain performance. The intended audience includes both EHS and supply chain professionals, as well as business executives. The tool demonstrates that EHS professionals, working as part of a cross-functional team, can add value to typical supply chain processes and activities. The document has a supplemental web page that contains additional case examples, resources, a value wizard and more.

Connecting the Drops: Toward Creative Water Strategies

This tool is designed to help businesses build a well-tailored water strategy that fits the business’ needs and circumstances. Case studies highlight ways that companies can create business value by pursuing the sustainable management of water resources. The tool enables organizations to better understand their relationship to water throughout the value chain, identify opportunities and risks, assess the business case for action, and develop and implement continual improvement-based water strategies.
