Global warming threatens China's march to prosperity by
cutting crops, shrinking rivers and unleashing more droughts
and floods, says the government's latest assessment of climate
change, projecting big shifts in how the nation feeds itself.

Carbon dioxide emissions caused by human activities over
the last century have increased the acidity of the world’s
oceans far beyond the range of natural variations, which
may significantly impair the ability of marine organisms
such as corals and mollusks to form their skeletons or shells,
a new study says.
SUPPLY
CHAIN

As the greening of the supply chain becomes even more sophisticated,
media, consumers, shareholders and governments are increasingly
pressuring organizations to actively measure and lower their
carbon footprint. As a result, businesses are not only looking
to reduce their own carbon footprint, they are examining the
green credentials of existing and potential suppliers.

Sustainable development is a vast and all-encompassing
idea, and corporate sustainability is nearly so. No corporate
sustainability leader can hope to make their company “sustainable”
in the next year—or even the next five. So as we
think ahead to our sustainability initiatives for 2012,
how can we set meaningful goals that will lead to measurable
good?

WATER
Source: NY Times
Each day, American municipalities discharge enough treated
wastewater into natural sources to fill Lake Champlain
within six months. Growing pressure on water supplies
and calls for updating the ancient subterranean piping
infrastructure have brought new scrutiny to this step
in the treatment process, which is labeled wasteful
and unnecessary by a spectrum of voices.
The
Economic Risks of a Water Constrained World

We live in a thirsty world. Climate change, population
growth and pollution make quenching this thirst dramatically
more difficult. Our over-leveraged global water position
is fundamentally unsustainable, and the business community
is already feeling the pain.
