With
the 42nd Anniversary of Earth Day being celebrated this
week, hundreds of thousands of individuals, companies
and organizations around the world, including many of
the GEMI member companies, will be celebrating it by planting
trees, picking up roadside trash, conducting various programs
for recycling and conservation, etc. As this Earth Day
is celebrated there will be much talk about a wide range
of issues that are important to our global environment,
providing an opportunity to focus on what may be the biggest
issue that only the most proactive companies are now addressing,
global water sustainability.
Over the past 10 years, GEMI has consistently
recognized the importance of water to our businesses and
the communities where we operate -- from the development
of GEMI’s first water tool, Connecting
the Drops in 2002, and GEMI’s second
water tool, Collecting
the Drops in 2007. With the launch last month
of GEMI’s third water sustainability tool, the GEMI
Local Water Tool™ (LWT) takes GEMI
and the tool users to an even more sophisticated level
of understanding and implementation by creating a tool
for companies and organizations to evaluate the external
impacts, business risks, opportunities and management
plans related to water use and discharge at a specific
site or operation. This new tool was developed in cooperation
with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development
(WBCSD) and IPIECA, the global oil and gas industry association
for environmental and social issues.
While GEMI has created a remarkable set
of solution tools that can be used around the world to
address water sustainability challenges and opportunities,
there is more that we can do together. For example, we
are already in discussions with the U.S. Department of
State about ways that we can work with other international
governmental entities to get GEMI’s solution tool
introduced and used around the world. There are also opportunities
to drive the knowledge and information that we have gained,
through the development of GEMI’s water sustainability
tools, throughout our own supply chains.
As the late Speaker of the House of Representatives
Tip O’Neill was often quoted as saying, “all
politics is local.” We can also say that “all
activities relating to water are local.” For example,
Smithfield Foods has provided financial support and employee
participation to World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) since
2003. This past year, 92 percent of our domestic facilities
took part. Our employees distributed 200 sampling kits
and had over 750 participants at sampling events held
in 17 states across the United States. In addition, our
operations in Poland and Romania held events as well.
Since GEMI’s creation more than 20
years ago, we have always been about “Business Helping
Business.” The tools that GEMI has created to address
water sustainability and other environmental issues including
but not limited to supply chain, sustainable development,
metrics, transparency, gives us the opportunity to expand
the audiences so that GEMI can become the organization
where “Business Helps the World” for this
and future Earth Days.
On behalf of GEMI, I wish you a happy Earth
Day week, and encourage you to make every day an Earth
Day.

Publishes National U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory

EPA
The U.S. EPA has released the 17th annual U.S. greenhouse
gas inventory. The final report shows overall emissions
in 2010 increased by 3.2 percent from the previous year.
The trend is attributed to an increase in energy consumption
across all economic sectors, due to increasing energy
demand associated with an expanding economy, and increased
demand for electricity for air conditioning due to warmer
summer weather during 2010.

challenges, and you sense that real progress will require
